Police identify young couple and unborn baby killed in crash
MASON COUNTY, MI – Police have identified a Scottville couple and their unborn son who were killed on Monday March 1 in a crash on the US-10.
The victims are David Lee Mclain-Williams, 24, and Ashley Nicole Plotts, 22, who was 8 months pregnant with their son, David Jr., Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole said in a statement.
The other driver, a 27-year-old man, Manton, who allegedly fled the scene, was jailed after being treated for injuries, police said. His name was withheld pending charges, police said.
The accident was reported at 1:42 p.m. on US-10 and Wever Road in Branch Township in Mason County.
Sheriff’s deputies determined that Mclain-Williams was driving a 2005 Buick Terraza that was struck by a 2010 Jeep Patriot. Police found the deceased Mclain-Williams in the vehicle with his seriously injured passenger. She later died at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.
Police learned that the driver of another vehicle fled on foot. A sheriff’s deputy and a conservation officer from the State Department of Natural Resources followed the driver for half a mile before residents helped them find him.
He was treated at Ludington Hospital for non-fatal injuries.
Police said speed and alcohol were likely factors in the crash.
The US-10 was closed for nearly four hours while police investigated. Several police and fire departments attended the scene. The accident is still under investigation.
